Experience That Lasts A Lifetime.
Teaching. Service. Excellence. A Solid Foundation for the Future.

Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year program utilizing a PGY-1, 2, 3 format, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME-RRC and received an eight-year accreditation approval as part of a select group of programs participating in a pilot program. This is the maximum possible length for accreditation.
In addition, our NEW Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Program started this year!!!
The residency program and ultrasound fellowship are based at York Hospital, a large community teaching hospital with a fully accredited Level 1 Trauma Center and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Pennsylvania (nearly 77,000 annual ED visits). The residency program provides additional patient care experiences at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Chambersburg Hospital, and the Pinnacle Health Toxicology Center at Harrisburg Hospital. These diverse centers provide an outstanding breadth of training experiences.
Our residency program is clinically-oriented and stresses patient contact and decision-making at all levels of training. We take pride in telling other physicians from around the world that our residents are exceptionally well-prepared for clinical, administrative, or academic practice. Our graduates serve in a wide variety of formal leadership roles, including Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA), Medical Directors/Assistant Medical Directors of Emergency Medicine groups or departments, Corporate CEO, Vice Chair, Residency Directorship positions, Fellowship Directorship, and other regional and national leadership positions. Over 20 graduates have assumed leadership roles in various work and professional areas, and we are understandably proud of the primary role our graduates have in shaping the practice of Emergency Medicine for the future.
Please take a look at details of our residency program on this website. We are very proud of our training program and the people who make York Hospital an outstanding choice for your future training in emergency medicine.
Strength Through Diversity
Diversity is highly valued by both the York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Differences which make us unique as individuals serve to make us stronger as a team. By embracing these differences, we are able to create and maintain a respectful and supportive environment in which to pursue our missions of excellence in teaching and in service to our patients.

A History of Excellence in Teaching and Clinical Service
The York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program began in 1989 with five residents per year. Since then, many individuals have fostered the growth and development our programs – resident and student education, research, and clinical care. Our current class size of eleven residents per year reflects the culmination of these 21 years of progress, leading to our stature as a leader in Emergency Medicine residency education.
Our 181 graduates currently practice in a wide variety of locations, including academic and community positions. Several residency graduates have gone on to pursue fellowship training, and two of our current senior residents accepted fellowship positions for 2011. Please explore the rest of our website for more information about our Residency Program, our Graduates, and our Faculty and Staff. We think you will be as impressed as we are with the talent, diversity, and accomplishments of the people who make up our exceptional Residency Program!
