Students from all of these schools, as well as many other medical schools, rotate on a regular basis at York Hospital. Summer Clinical Externship in Emergency Medicine
Our first Summer Clinical Externship in Emergency Medicine was developed and implemented in 2009 and attended by several students from our affiliate institutions. This program, directed by Elizabeth C. Hall, M.D., allows students who have recently completed the first year of medical school to paricipate in a structured program of shadowing resident and attending physicians, practicing history/interviewing skills and physical exam skills, case discussions with faculty and residents, EMS ride-alongs, ECG interpretaton sessions, and medical writing.
Medical Student Procedure Day
This session, held each spring, highlights the talents of our attending faculty as well as the high-tech capabilities of our Medical Simulation Center. Directed by David D. Vega, M.D., this program allows 2nd year students from our affiliated medical schools to learn in small group sessions and to practice advanced procedures such as intubaton and airway management, central line placement, emergency ultrasound, suturing, and ACLS/code scenarios. This session offers students early in medical school an opportunity for exposure to Emergency Medicine and the challenging and exciting procedures which are critical to daily practice.
Drexel University College of Medicine Primary Care Practicum -- York Hospital Emergency Department
This rotation is offered each spring for up to 2 students in the PIL Program at Drexel University College of Medicine. Directed by Michael A. Bohrn, M.D., this rotation allows key practice in developing history/interviewing skills as well as physical examination skills in a busy teaching Emergency Department setting. Students interact with a wide variety of patients at many levels of clinical acuity. The clinical rotation is supplemented by a community project, as well as core learning sessions and exams at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Affiliate Hospitals
The York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program maintains several rotations at our affiliate hospitals. These rotations were selected to enhance specific educational experiences during the residency program. All faculty for emergency medicine rotations are ABEM Board-Certified in Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Gettysburg Hospital
This 102 bed community hospital, located in historic Gettysburg, is our sister institution and a member of WellSpan Health. Our residents spend one week during the anesthesia rotation, and are afforded a tremendous clinical exposure to a wide variety of cases.
Chambersburg Hospital
This rural 217-bed community hospital provides unique experiences for Emergency Medicine residents. The rural location allows observation of and experience with a different practice style.
Highlights include:

- Outstanding education in billing, coding, and documentation.
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)
One of the premier children’s hospitals in the world, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is the site of an excellent pediatric emergency medicine rotation.
Highlights include:
- ED volume greater than 72,000 visits per year
- Full spectrum of pediatric emergencies
- Urban academic center
- Nationally-renowned faculty
- Interaction with EM residents from other local programs
- Apartment for resident use is maintained in Philadelphia
Pinnacle Health Toxicology Center/Harrisburg Hospital
The Pinnacle Health Toxicology Center represents the first dedicated inpatient toxicology unit in the United States. Home of a toxicology fellowship program and staffed by Board-Certified Toxicologists, this center receives patients from throughout central Pennsylvania. Regular conferences and didactic sessions enhance this one-of-a-kind experience.
