Emergency Medicine Summer Clinical Externship Program for Medical Students
Eligible Students:
Medical students who have recently completed the MS-I year (i.e., summer between first and second year).
Student Benefits:
- Early exposure to emergency medicine in a busy community academic center
- Opportunity to practice observed history and physical examination skills on patients in the ED with feedback from Emergency Medicine Attendings
- Opportunity to shadow Emergency Medicine Attendings and Residents
- Participation in resident workshops/skill stations and lectures
- Learn and practice various procedures in our simulation center (i.e. intubation, central lines, chest tubes, suturing, splinting, ultrasound and running resuscitations)
- Participation in important emergency medicine lectures dedicated to medical students
- Specific training in ECG interpretation and other clinical skills
- Opportunity to do ride-alongs with our paramedics
- Development of professional skills – medical writing and oral presentation skills
- $500 stipend, free room/meals, free parking
- Development of externship portfolio of deliverables/projects: Oral case presentation and ECG write-up
Requirements:
- Completion of MS-I year required to participate
- Weekly clinical shadowing shifts and observed history and physical exams
- Attendance at Tuesday medical student academic days
- Attendance at scheduled medical simulation sessions
- Completion of oral topic presentation
- Completion of ECG write-up
- ECG diagnosis
- Background/case data
- ECG findings/discussion
- Summary
- References (including journal/primary references)
Course Length
Four weeks: June 1, 2010 to June 25, 2010
Monday through Friday (weekends off)
Student Selection Process:
- Essay outlining interest (500 words or less)
- Curriculum vitae

- Accepted student will be notified via electronic and U.S. mail in mid-March 2010
