Emergency Medicine Research/Scholarly Activity

As an academic community teaching facility, York Hospital is committed to enhancing resident education and clinical care through scholarly activity and research.  The Emig Research Center is supported by the Department of Research and features physicians, biostaticians, basic scientists, and other research support personnel.

The Department of Emergency Medicine participates in a wide variety of scholarly activities, including clinical research trials, multicenter studies, and other programs.  Each emergency medicine resident must complete and present a scholarly project in order to graduate from the residency program.  We have excellent institutional and departmental support for research and we are fortunate to have a dedicated Emergency Medicine Research Associate in our department.

The Emergency Medicine faculty and residents participate as editors/authors for a large number of textbooks, journals, and other publications.  Here is a sampling of faculty participation with textbooks and other media:

  • Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 7th Edition (Amsterdam - chapter author)
  • Harwood-Nuss' Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine, 5th Edition (Amsterdam, Kramer, Bohrn, Vega - chapter authors)
  • Physician Board Review - Emergency Medicine iPhone app (Rotondo - editor)
  • ECG in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care (Pollack - chapter author)
  • The Merck Manual (Rotondo - chapter author)

National and Regional CPC Competitions

Our residents and faculty participate regularly as case discussants at both the national SAEM Clinico-Pathological Conference (CPC) Competition and the regional PaACEP CPC Competition.  During the current academic year, the following residents and faculty earned CPC Competition case discussant roles:

  • Bob Stuntz, MD - winner of Best Resident Discussant Award at the PaACEP CPC Competition in Philadelphia, PA
  • Tom Kehrl, MD - faculty discussant at the PaACEP CPC Compeition
  • Steve Harris, MD - resident discussant at the national SAEM CPC Competition Semi-Finals in Phoenix, AZ
  • Tom Yeich, MD - faculty discussant at the national SAEM CPC Compeition Semi-Finals

In addition, faculty members Drs. Rotondo, Benenson, and Bohrn have all participated as national CPC Competiton Judges in recent years.  Dr. Bohrn was selected as a Judging Team Leader for the SAEM Semi-Final Competition in Phoenix, AZ and will be one of only six Judges for the national CPC Finals Competition at the ACEP Conference in Las Vegas, NV in October 2010.  Another faculty member, Dr. Schrading, is a former National Champion at the CPC Competition as a case discussant.

Research

We pride ourselves on producing high-quality research projects.  The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is well-represented at regional and national Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) meetings, the annual American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Research Forum, the PaACEP Spivey Research Competition, and a variety of other national and international meetings.  The Emergency Medicine residents are also perennial top-performers at the York Hospital Residents' Research Day sessions.

Peter Viriassov, D.O. is the recipient of the 2010 Mid-Atlantic SAEM Meeting Most Outstanding Resident Research Presentation Award.  This research conference was held in Charlottesville, VA.  Bryan Wexler, M.D. won the 2010 York Hospital Residents' Research Day Award for the Best Case Presentation.
