Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year program utilizing a PGY-1, 2, 3 format, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME-RRC and received an eight-year accreditation approval as part of a select group of programs participating in a pilot program. This is the maximum possible length for accreditation.
In addition, our NEW Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Program will be starting in 2011 !!!
The residency program and ultrasound fellowship are based at York Hospital, a large community teaching hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Pennsylvania (nearly 79,000 annual ED visits). The residency program provides additional patient care experiences at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Chambersburg Hospital, and the Pinnacle Health Toxicology Center at Harrisburg Hospital. These diverse centers provide an outstanding breadth of training experiences.
Our residency program is clinically-oriented and stresses patient contact and decision making at all levels of training. We take pride in telling other physicians from around the world that our residents are exceptionally well-prepared for clinical, administrative, or academic practice.

Balancing the Approach to Residency Training
We strive to provide a consistent educational approach in a variety of clinical settings. To accomplish this, our residents receive several weeks of training in different nearby institutions, in addition to their core training at York Hospital.
A History of Excellence in Teaching and Clinical Service
The York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program began in 1989 with five residents per year. Since then, many individuals have fostered the growth and development our programs – resident and student education, research, and clinical care. Our current class size of eleven residents per year reflects the culmination of these 21 years of progress, leading to our stature as a leader in Emergency Medicine residency education.
Our 170 graduates currently practice in a wide variety of locations, including academic and community positions. Several residency graduates have gone on to pursue fellowship training, and two of our current senior residents have already accepted fellowship positions beginning in 2011.
