WellSpan York Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship

The WellSpan York Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship is a collaborative program offered through the hospital’s Family Medicine Residency and WellSpan Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.  The fellowship will be one-year in duration and will be longitudinally-based.   For example, a patient diagnosed by the fellow on the field with a ligament tear will be followed by the fellow:

  • in the office for confirmation and pre-operative assessment
  • in the operating room to assist at the surgery
  • with the fellow rounding in the hospital
  • at rehabilitation for postoperative course
  • back in the office for follow-up care
  • in the team training room, preparing for competition again

We are actively recruiting for the 2015-2016 academic year

In addition to the academic side of the program, we run a sports medicine clinic and have contracts to provide medical attendance on the sidelines at a number of high schools, a college, and several professional teams in the area.  Most of the venues are within a 10-minute drive of WellSpan York Hospital, allowing the fellow to make the best use of his or her time.

In addition to prodigious clinical opportunities, we offer:

  • a first-class library and research center
  • an active simulation center
  • unparalleled cooperation between the numerous disciplines spanned by sports medicine

Conferences:
The fellow will participate in weekly sports medicine conferences, weekly family medicine conferences, every two month journal club in Family Medicine, every two month journal club in sports medicine, and monthly radiology conferences.  In addition, the fellow will present a joint injection workshop and a casting and splinting workshop for the family medicine residents.

Research:
The fellow will be expected to perform a research and/or quality improvement project and to present the results both at the local Resident Research Day and at a national conference.   She or he will have a full team of research and information specialists at her or his disposal to assist in completion of the project.
